Been about a year since my last mailer, so in case you’re wondering, this is my infrequent newsletter on visual identities, logo design, and other things of interest. Unless you’re a recent subscriber, rest assured, you signed-up at some point, either through identitydesigned.com, logodesignlove.com, or davidairey.com, but if you’re cutting down on emails there’s an unsubscribe link at the bottom.
If you’re staying with me, beautiful. The newsletter’s now sent via Substack rather than MailerLite, so “legacy subscribers” might notice a different look. Substack’s intuitive and free so the switch will save the funds to take the kids somewhere nice. There’s a comment section, too. Feel free to share thoughts, questions.
Anyway, thanks for reading. Here’s that content you signed-up for — a roundup of new posts from my design websites, followed by a few links of note.
Latest from Identity Designed
Atypical is a specialty coffee roastery in Saigon. “The visual identity combines the rawness of Saigon street culture with the refinement of the brand’s product. Inspired by the facade of the city, the design prominently features a custom typeface inspired by the iconic ‘Khoan cắt bê-tông’ (concrete drillers) graffiti.”
Ryuko is a Japanese kitchen and bar restaurant in Calgary. “We designed a flexible visual language that takes on a contemporary approach to traditional Japanese sensibility, textures and imagery.”
The Other House combines the services of a hotel and the home comforts of apartment-style living with the amenities a members’ club. “The identity incorporates bold typography, intimate photography, and modern iconography with a classic flourish to balance the traditional with the unconventional. Each detailed illustration (by Mariana Rodrigues) is bespoke to each physical and digital application within The Other House spaces.”
And from Logo Design Love
Karol Śliwka was a Polish graphic designer renowned for creating more than 400 graphic symbols. “I went to Warsaw with only a few zlotys with me, which my mother gave me for a roll, but that was not enough for food or for the train. So I admit that I was riding on a fake ticket.”
Graphis archives and promotes talent in design, photography, art, and advertising. It also publishes books and magazines on design, communication, and the arts, with a vast archive dating back to 1944 when it was founded in Switzerland by Walter Herdeg and Dr Walter Amstutz.
Through his extensive design and educational work, Armin Hofmann (1920–2020) is considered one of the most influential graphic designers in Switzerland. “As a human being he is simple and unassuming. As a teacher, he has few equals.” — Paul Rand
Last, not least…
“To allow riders to better view autumn leaves, the driver of this Eizan Electric Railway train on the Kurama Line switches off the lights so passengers can better view this Maple Tunnel outside Kyoto.”
Sacred symbolism in Pennsylvania Dutch barn stars.
Feeling a little nostalgic with the Web Design Museum.
