Identity Designed #013
With this first newsletter of 2025 I thought I’d share a positive note for my fellow designers searching for new work, from a 2012 speech by Neil Gaiman (on YouTube).
“People keep working in a freelance world [.…] because their work is good, because they’re easy to get along with, and because they deliver the work on time.
“And you don’t even need all three.
“Two out of three is fine.
“People will tolerate how unpleasant you are if your work is good and you deliver it on time.
“People will forgive the lateness of your work if it’s good and they like you.
“And you don’t have to be as good as everyone else if you’re on time and it’s always a pleasure to hear from you.”
So for those who might be anxious over the future of the profession and the impact of AI, don’t look too far ahead as it’s likely to cause unnecessary worry. Instead, reflect on how you have the skills to help people today. Use those skills. Show your work. Enjoy the process. Because life can be fleeting, and if we’re not enjoying what we do, well, where’s the fun in that?
